According to legend, Spangenberg Castle was built by ‘Wild Kaspar’ in the remote, deserted Speyerbach valley in the 11th century. It served as a hiding place for him and the emperor's daughter, whom he had kidnapped. On 6 January 1100, it came into the possession of the Speyer Abbey through a donation. The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1317 and for many years it served as the residence of the Stutmeisters, who bred horses for the Speyer bishops.

Spangenberg Castle from the 11th century
The most striking landmark in the valley, situated on a steep and mighty rocky outcrop. It was mentioned as early as 1100 when it passed into the possession of the Speyer diocese. After its destruction in 1470/1471 during the Weissenburg Feud, the castle was repaired and made habitable again in 1480. It has been in ruins since the Thirty Years' War. Significant parts of the palace, gate building in front of the main castle and parts of the ramparts have been preserved. The castle and the castle tavern have been renovated.
