The hike starts from the historic town center into the varied landscape of the Edelstein region around Herrstein. Gentle ascents and descents, dreamy paths and stream valleys, as well as spectacular views over the Hunsrück. The natural monuments "Jammereiche" and "Rabenkanzel," as well as sensory benches inviting rest, complete this hike. The Medieval Path was honored as Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2010.
The Medieval Path begins in the historic town center of Herrstein. The richly decorated half-timbered houses from the 15th to 18th centuries testify to the architecture of the late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. An ensemble of around 60 bourgeois houses below the castle and church groups around the town hall square. Added to this are picturesque alleys and the landmark of Herrstein, the old clock tower. A stairway leads the hiker to the castle church, the Schinderhannes Tower, and then into the nearby beech wood. Soon the rolling hilly land of the Hunsrück with fields, meadows, and forest becomes visible. Here you have fantastic views over the patchwork of a wonderful meadow and field landscape. The path runs over the Hosenbach via a wooden bridge. A sign informs that in the nearby village of Niederhosenbach the Saint Hildegard of Bingen was probably born. At the natural monument "Rabenkanzel," a gray rock block made of Taunus quartzite, a narrow path winds along the natural monument. On a hill with views over the various field formations stands the mighty Jammereiche, an impressive natural monument with a turbulent past.
After a short forest section, you are again on a soft meadow path with dream views into the Hunsrückland.
On the return way to Herrstein, a climb to the Herrstein observation tower must not be missed.
TIP: a guided tour through the historic town center of Herrstein (e.g., as a torchlight tour with a torch in hand).

Roadbook
The starting point of the hike is the historic Herrstein. We start on the main street, opposite the Bachweg parking lot at the wooden entrance gate of the Medieval Path. The path takes us through the medieval town center with its restored half-timbered houses. Passing the "Oberwörresbach Church Gate" and the "Hankel Fountain," we reach the clock tower, the landmark of Herrstein, through a battlement passage. We follow the path to the left into Uhrturmgasse, turn right into Schlossweg, and reach the town hall square, above whose half-timbered facades the Schinderhannes Tower rises. Finally, we pass the pillory and climb the steps to the castle church. Here, a picturesque view of the town opens up before we leave historic Herrstein behind through a stone gate.
The path now leads through the forest until we reach the open landscape and can enjoy the broad view of the surrounding fields, woods, and villages. We follow the path over the fields, along the forest edge, and finally cross the Hosenbach on a small wooden bridge. At the fork in the path, an information board points to the nearby village of Niederhosenbach, the probable birthplace of the famous Hildegard of Bingen.
We keep to the left and finally turn right uphill into the forest. After a few minutes, the natural monument Rabenkanzel is reached. A hiking rest area invites you to linger there before we follow the narrow path winding uphill between the trees. We follow the path through the forest and along the forest edge, passing the local community of Breitenthal. Further uphill between open fields, we reach the natural monument Jammereiche, where we rest on a sensory bench and enjoy the wide view. On the following stretch, we have another opportunity to experience the impressive panoramic view, for example, from the viewing platform, which offers a sight of 17 villages and the mountain ranges of the low mountain landscape. Then we reach the Herrstein observation tower with a covered rest area.
The trail continues on winding narrow paths downhill towards Herrstein. Along the way, another rest area invites you to take a break and offers a view over the historic town. Upon arriving in Herrstein, we follow the Fischbach through the gardens and finally return to the starting point of our hike. A good opportunity to stroll once again through the historic town center or to conclude the hike with a cozy stopover.

Our tips for an untroubled hiking pleasure:
Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes, it's twice as fun. Functional clothing, poles, and breathable backpacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Robust jogging or casual shoes are only suitable for short distances on flat paths. For longer routes, we recommend sturdy hiking boots with a grippy, non-slip sole. Also think of sun protection and bring a drink. A liter of water is ideal.
