The museum in Herrstein is located in the immediate vicinity of the former town gate, today's clock tower. It systematically presents the rich history of the town and the surrounding area from early geological history through the Celtic and Roman periods to the Middle Ages and the present day with very interesting exhibits and information boards. Of particular interest from geological history are the slate fossils and minerals from the region, which formed the basis of the gemstone industry in the area. The life and buildings of the Celts from the center of their settlement area are also presented, as are numerous archaeological finds from Roman times. The town, which was founded between 1100 and 1200 AD as a secondary residence of the Counts of Sponheim, was granted town rights in 1428 AD and was the seat of a high court. Visitors will find many exhibits and explanations from this period and especially from medieval justice. Further sections are dedicated to the horrors of the Thirty Years' War and the later affiliation to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. Of particular interest are the displays of historical trades such as tanners, weavers, wood turners, agate cutters and mechanics. Visitors will find a fully preserved bicycle built by a local mechanic in 1868 and a depiction of the Herrstein power station, which was founded in 1903. Another section is devoted to the mining industry and the copper and iron smelters that used to be very well represented in the region.
