The castle was built as a fortress around the turn of the 13th/14th century and converted into a palace in 1601. It was completely renovated around 1900 and listed as a historical monument in 1957.
Today it is privately owned and, along with Eltz Castle and Gemünden Castle, is the only habitable castle from the Middle Ages in the Hunsrück. It can be visited on the “Open Monument Day”.
Alongside Eltz Castle and Gemünden Castle, Allenbach Castle is the only habitable castle from the Middle Ages in the Hunsrück region.
Today it is a listed building. Allenbach was a flourishing industrial town from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century. Two copper smelters are documented from 1400 and 1450 respectively. They were supplied with ore from the Hosenbach valley near Fischbach and smelted for the Counts of Sponheim as well as for the Counts of the Rhine and Wildgrafen.
You can find out more about the history of the village on further information boards on a walk through Allenbach!
