Castles, palaces, and ruins in and around the alpine town of Bad Reichenhall
With a total length of over 33 kilometers, the Castle Route is one of the longest hikes starting from Bad Reichenhall. However, this themed hike is not only one of the longest in and around the alpine town of Bad Reichenhall, it is also one of the most beautiful. It opens up the castles, palaces, and ruins with explanations on site throughout the entire area of Bad Reichenhall, Bayerisch Gmain, and Großgmain.
Author’s recommendation
A highlight of the route is Staufeneck Castle at the foot of the Staufen. From high up, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful view over Piding and visit the Kneipp facility.

Starting from Marzoll, the Castle Route first crosses the border into Austria to the Plainberg castle ruin in Großgmain. Back in Germany, the hiking trail winds along a railway line at the foot of the Lattengebirge. Passing through Bayerisch Gmain and the southern part of the old town of Bad Reichenhall, we continue to Kirchberg and along the salt pipeline trail towards Thumsee. From there, the route goes past the Karlstein fish farm along the Nonner Au and the Saalach to Mauthausen.
The return route leads back to Marzoll via Pidingerau and Türk. Of course, it is also possible to complete this route in several stages.
