This loop is marked throughout with the Nordwaldkammweg signposting. Due to the differences in altitude, the hiking trail is somewhat strenuous. However, the highlight of the trail makes up for the effort - the top of the Braunberg with the rustic Braunberghütte. The mountain is one of the most beautiful hiking mountains and excursion destinations in the Mühlviertel heartland. In fine weather, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Alps. The Braunberg is also a hiking trail junction for two long-distance hiking trails: The Nordwaldkammweg from the Dreisesselberg in Bavaria to the Mandelstein in Lower Austria and the "170" long-distance hiking trail from Mauthausen to Karlstift cross paths at the ÖAV hut directly on the Braunberg.

The circular route begins at the Wanderstein and follows the Nordwaldkammweg Ia via the Alm to the Braunberghütte. After climbing the Braunberg east summit, the return route leads along the Nordwaldkammweg via St. Oswald bei Freistadt and the Zelletau back to the starting point.

    Roadbook

Walk eastwards along the city moat towards Böhmertor.

Nordwaldkammweg Ia: At the Feldaist bridge in Freistadt, the Nordwaldkammweg and variant Ia split. Follow the Feldaist downhill to the Nowak roofing company and then hike uphill through the Manzenreith settlement to the Gänsecker farmhouse. There you can already see the gallery of the S10 bypass ahead of you, which you cross on the right. After the Brandstätter farmhouse, the trail leads into the forest to the alpine pasture. The Hofbauern chapel on the shortest connection between the market town of Lasberg and Gunnersdorf is worth a look before descending to Haugenödt (perforated stone on the path immediately afterwards). The road to the Lasberg quarry is crossed on the way downhill. At the transformer (574m) we reach the Lasberg - St. Oswald road, which we follow to the Weißeneiche natural monument, an old oak tree standing alone at the roadside, which belongs to the Weissengut in Kronau (N48° 29.250', E14° 37.730'), before heading south-east again. After more than 300 metres in altitude, the Braunberghütte is almost reached at a Celtic sacrificial bowl (pre-Christian place of power at N48° 28.825', E14° 35.004'), 10 km from Freistadt.

After the ascent to the eastern summit (beautiful summit cross), the route leads back to the Braunberghütte and then downhill to St. Oswald/Freistadt via Ober- and Unterreitern. It is 11km to Freistadt. We enjoy the beautiful view of St. Oswald, the Feistritz valley towards Florenthein, the Hussenstein and the Viehberg. Through St. Oswald we follow the ridge trail markings, past the late Gothic church. The path now leads to the Modlbauer farm and along the road to Etzelsdorf. After the Modlbauer farm, the road leads uphill to the Rannahof youth guesthouse run by the Friends of Nature. However, we turn left towards Reikersdorf and then enter the Zelletau in the beginning forest. Along the way is the shooting range and the new spring for Freistadt. If you still have enough energy, do another lap along the Flaps fitness and running trail. After reaching the Forsthau, the route leads downhill through the forest on the new route of the Nordwaldkammweg, which was created as part of the construction of the S10 motorway. There is now a pavement on the right along Oswalderstrasse from the S10 tunnel. After the short section on Oswalderstrasse, the old road branches off steeply downhill to the right to the old Böck white tannery, now a cultural centre, and to the Feldaistbrücke junction.
