Deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, it was natural for farmers in the 19th century to create places of devotion with house and field crosses. They built them, for example, during livestock epidemics, after storms, personal misfortunes, or in memory of loved ones. The hike leads to field and house crosses, a chapel, and religious images in the middle of the forest.
The design of these places of silence ranges from the elaborately crafted Jesus cross on the wall of a stately farmhouse to the enclosed prayer room of a neat chapel and to a simple image of Mary. To this day, the bell of the chapel in Gumpeltshofen is rung every day at noon by the householder of the neighboring farm.
The first half of the hike is characterized by meadows, pastures, and a hamlet. When ascending the forest-rich Beurener Berg, the view opens to the west. In good visibility, Waldburg and Zeil castle can be seen in the distance. Shortly before the descent to the starting point of the hike, it is worth turning your eyes north. There, the Ur lakes gleam like mirrors on the horizon.
