The Lahn-Dill area between Wetzlar and Braunfels was shaped by over 2,500 years of iron ore mining. Here you can experience this while hiking. The highlight of the GeoRoute is a mine tour in the visitor mine Grube Fortuna.
The Lahn-Dill region was shaped by mining for a long time. It was a lucrative ore district. With the closure of the Grube Fortuna on March 4, 1983, the more than 2,500-year history of iron ore mining in Hesse also ended. Today you can enjoy hiking following in the footsteps of the miners and study stories about mining and miners along the way. Here is the film about it!
At the upper mining site of the Grube Fortuna directly on the hiking trail, you can watch the hoist operator at work in the engine house (opening hours here) and a little further above, take a deep look into the old open-cast mine.
The Bergmannsroute can be combined with stage 11 upstream of the Lahnwanderweg for a nice weekend tour.
Good luck!
Author’s recommendation
The authentic underground tour in the Grube Fortuna should not be missed by anyone. Start early in the morning to allow enough time for this, and best to secure tickets online in advance!

Roadbook
Stage 1: Wetzlar to Leun (21 km)
From the train station (S) towards the town center (access path Lahnwanderweg). "Am Eisenmarkt" turn right into Lahnstraße, here the first Bergmannsroute marker appears. Beautifully, along the Lahn riverbank, the route leads out of Wetzlar. Along the bank of the Lahn (1) accompanied by the splashing of the water, the path continues to Dalheim. Then on the heights, views open repeatedly into the Lahn valley and over to Braunfels Castle. In Altenberg, a (2) detour to the former monastery (St. Elisabeth!) is worthwhile. Through wide fields and beautiful mixed forest, the Bergmannsroute leads to the visitor mine Grube Fortuna (3), the next highlight of this stage. Behind the mining house begins the interesting mining educational trail. Afterwards, illustrious resting places line up like pearls on a string. Where to take a break now, at the resting place "Karls-Ruhe" at Schäferburg (4) or at "Walters Hütte"? The last kilometers finally lead to the stage destination Leun (5).
Stage 2: Leun to Braunfels (7.4 km)
Through the meadow floodplains, the route goes to Leun-Braunfels train station (6). Although Braunfels already appears in the station's name, it is still 5 km through beech forest to the town on the hill. On a beautiful path along Hecksberg, it continues steadily uphill. At the signpost "Kastanienallee" the Bergmannsroute ends. Then left over stairs to the hilltop with Braunfels Castle and the picturesque market square (E). Stage 11 of the Lahnwanderweg leads back to Wetzlar (see also pages 30-31).
