Around the Höllenberg: Of vultures, hats, and piglets
HANWAG
On this moderate circular route, we hike around the Höllenberg and the Heischberg in the Palatinate and encounter all kinds of striking rock formations.
This exciting route from Spirkelbach is an absolute highlight for lovers of unusual rock formations: We pass the Höllenfelsen and the Friedrichsfelsen (Luger Fritz), pass the Geiersteine and the Runden Hut – as well as the Large and Small Ferkelstein at the end of our circular route. Even if you can more or less understand how the rock formations got their respective names: the rocks here, which seem to grow upwards, are impressive in any case. And you can let your imagination roam a bit while looking at them.
The hike, which takes us along the mountain ridges of the Höllenberg and the Heischberg, also offers magnificent views. The moderate circular hiking trail mostly follows well passable paths and trails; in some places it can become a bit slippery when wet. So you should definitely wear sturdy and comfortable shoes.

Roadbook
We start our route at the hiking parking lot in Spirkelbach and head straight onto the hiking trail towards Höllenberg. We follow the path southward until it gently ascends around the Höllenberg to the Friedrichsfels. From there, we go downhill into the small village of Lug. We walk a short stretch along the main street, then turn left twice in a row at the church until the path leads us onto Bergstraße and then back to the hiking trail. The steepest ascent of the route follows, with small switchbacks past Hornstein.
We reach the highest point of our hike and walk through a magnificent natural landscape for a stretch on level ground past the Runden Hut. We descend from the Heischberg towards Kaisermühle.
The hiking path gently ascends and passes the two Ferkelsteine (large and small). To the right is again the village of Spirkelbach, and we return to the parking lot.
