Approach to Kaunergrat hut from Plangeross
The shortest approach to the Kaunergrat hut leads uphill in a fairly direct line from Plangeross. The starting point is easily accessible by public transport.
The Kaunergrat hut is known as a base for the Watzespitze and Verpeilspitze, but there are many other very rewarding destinations in the area. A good overview of possible destinations is available on the hut's homepage and at the hut itself.
At first the path leads somewhat steeply uphill, passes a waterfall and then climbs over lush alpine roses above the tree line. After the first steep section the path flattens out and leads over alpine meadows into the valley. Particularly in early summer colorful flowers grow here. After another steep section the terrain becomes rougher and more alpine. You hike past rocky blocks and a glacier lake and already see the Kaunergrat hut in the distance. Towards the end the path leads along the glacier's lateral moraine to the hut.

Roadbook
From the bus stop head west through the village and down to the Pitze river. From the parking lot follow the road along the Pitze in a southerly direction. You cross the Pitze over a bridge, yellow signs point the way here (No. 927). Follow the road uphill into the forest, at the first bend you pass a viewpoint bench. The path gets steeper as you climb, sometimes pleasantly close to the waterfall. Always follow the markings and the yellow signs.
At the unserviced Plangeross Alm the first steep section is overcome and you continue the path over lush alpine meadows. Be sure to close the pasture gate after passing through. Now continue uphill into the valley, always heading west. At about 2470m you pass a glacier lake and then the Kaunergrat hut comes into view. Finally you follow the lateral moraine to the wonderfully situated hut.
