On the outskirts of Sopron, in the gentler, forested hills of the Alpine foothills, but still in a mountainous environment, the Lőverek offers an easy, fulfilling circular route also suitable for wheelchair users.

Visitors to the city of coolness can recharge physically and mentally with a few hours of relaxation in fresh air and peaceful forest bird songs. Those eager to exercise can enjoy the opportunities provided by forest gym equipment and gentle slopes suitable for walking and running, while those seeking contemplation are attracted by cozy resting spots in this rich, clean environment. The route, which also passes through forest playgrounds, is suitable for easy family excursions, stroller walks, and group relaxation.

Sopron's most famous and frequented excursion area is the Lőverek, where the city's edge blends almost seamlessly into the ancient oak forest that every Sopron resident is proud of. This wooded environment is also home to the nationally recognized heart sanatorium. Our starting point is a square bordered by several pavilions, parking lots, service facilities, and a restaurant, and it hosts the bus turnaround where the local line 1 bus arriving from Sopron train station stops, allowing train travelers to get off the scheduled bus service. Car travelers can start their journey from the shaded parking lot beside the bus turnaround.

The predominant oak woodland of the area provides natural air conditioning even during summer heatwaves in this small valley. The local forestry maintains the area with care, offering forest furniture and infrastructure that blends naturally into the landscape, inviting hikers. Several routes are available; sadly, it is not possible to reach the Károly lookout tower barrier-free, but the current route runs along the ridges, sides, and valleys of the surrounding hills and is accessible by wheelchair. The mostly forested, winding, spacious gravel path includes short sections (20-40 m) with steeper parts where the wheelchair user may need assistance from a companion. Besides this, the compacted gravel surface mostly has gentle slopes and suitable surface conditions for less rehabilitated hikers. The beautiful oak forest is only sporadically interrupted by other deciduous tree species, and occasionally old forest pines diversify the uniform stand. Although it is a well-maintained circular route, there are no paved or asphalt surfaces; the gravel path includes some sinking crumbly sections or meter-long areas hindered by roots, so the route is not recommended with hospital or heavy battery-powered wheelchairs. However, the route does not require extreme skills, and its final section enriches hikers with a truly magnificent experience.

    Author’s recommendation

    • The route is not recommended independently. It features slopes typical of average mountainous areas in Hungary and surface conditions better than average, although the length of the route is especially gentle. However, there are short steep sections that require assistance from a companion, and there might be life situations or technical problems that cannot be managed independently.
    • The route is recommended with an active wheelchair equipped with large front wheels or an active wheelchair equipped with an electric adapter-driven trailer, even suitable for recently injured or less rehabilitated persons with an experienced companion.
    • The route is not recommended with a hospital wheelchair or a wheelchair with a large battery.
    • During the route, there is no accessible toilet. However, the restaurant located beside our starting and ending point is accessible, offering a not fully accessible but spacious restroom where minor needs can be met.
    • Accessible toilets can be found in the nearby heart sanatorium building (Sopron Rehabilitation Institute).
    • Food options are available seasonally at one of the buffets near the starting point of our route, or it is advisable to shop in Sopron and carry bottled drinking water on the route.
    • Carry a spare inner tube and a suitable pump.
    • In case of changeable weather, carry a raincoat/umbrella; the route can be completed in rainy weather but is not recommended in winter.
    • A hat and seasonal mosquito repellent are recommended.

    Itinerary:

Follow the markings of the Várisi walking path, indicated by the stylized image of Sopron's Firewatch Tower.

    Route description:

Our route starts directly from the parking lot, on a gently ascending gravel forest road closed by a barrier and marked with an information board, leading us into the mature oak forest. The area is characterized by two important local "prides": over 30 years ago, the first forest fitness trail was built here, and the path is currently accompanied by fitness equipment. The other pride is that the sustainable, local dialect-named "lékes" forest logging technique was first introduced in these forests; this method ensures forest harmony by selectively harvesting only individual trees, allowing new shoots to blend organically into the stand.

This even, "lego-like" and slightly regular tree formation can be observed in most places, as we ascend sheltered along the relatively wide tourist path following the terrain's undulations. In the well-maintained forest, you will regularly encounter some pieces of the fitness trail equipment, information boards presenting the area, forestry, natural, and biological publications, and simple wooden bench-table combos for resting. Light filters through the not too dense canopy, brightening our path cheerfully.

After about 500-600 meters, the path reaches a steeper section, offering a beautiful view of the bend; here it is worthwhile to take assistance from a companion over a few tens of meters. Overall, only one or two similar, slightly more difficult sections can be found.

We reach a plateau-like area, where the city edge lies far behind us in all directions. After the junction leading to the non-wheelchair-accessible lookout, the path continues for a long stretch without major direction changes – accompanied by birdsong, with some steeper paths joining from the left and the fitness trail equipment appearing rhythmically. Soon, after a sharp left turn, we reach a slightly steep, somewhat rocky descent, occasionally accompanied by the branches of fallen dead trees pointing skyward with their roots. Even in this otherwise rainiest region nationwide, the signs of extreme drought can already be observed in the undergrowth.

The long straight descent should occasionally be covered backward with the help of a companion, as the crumbly surface is not favorable for braking. It is typical that not only hikers but also trail runners and dog walkers frequently use the forest. Unfortunately, the view in the forest is rather limited; from the mentioned steep portion, the peaceful rolling hills beyond the forest can be glimpsed here and there through the canopy.

After another left turn, we reach the farthest point from our starting point, from where we begin the return journey with a slight descent. The dominant forest stand is replaced by a more colorful and heterogeneous milieu: we roll through mixed forest composed of hazel, acacia, elm, and ash trees, in a gracefully winding “tunnel.” After roughly a kilometer of winding, we arrive in a humid valley at the most developed part of our route, the entrance to Ojtozi avenue.

Huge oaks mark that they can endure the memory of centuries; small information boards can be read at their bases. We are greeted by the last station of the forest sports trail and a wooden baby changing facility, with the villas of the city edge and a car park already stretching on the right.

Ojtozi avenue frames our path with its beautiful, huge trees, preserving the memory of Sopron soldiers who fought in World War I. A bas-relief in the middle of the avenue commemorates the tragic Ojtozi battle in August 1917.

The flat, absolutely accessible gravel promenade is an unforgettable experience in itself, with dense vegetation on both sides rejoicing in the humid, cool climate as do the hikers. The discreetly illuminated memorial walkway at night is also frequently used by local athletes, runners, families, and tourists, forming an integral, worthy periphery of the city edge.

Slowly, we reach the end of our route, where the far end of the promenade merges into a short asphalt section, gradually returning us to our starting point, the Lőverek parking lot.

We warmly recommend this easy, relatively short, and fulfilling circular route to everyone who desires motion, joy, freedom, and relaxation.
