The approximately 100 km long Ahornweg runs in the southern part of the Osnabrück region as a circular hiking trail in the form of a figure eight. In total, five viewing towers offer hikers views of the varied landscape with its moderately hilly profile.
Attractive transitions between forest and field make every hiker’s heart beat faster. The Ahornweg is divided into six routes, split into a small and large loop.
The small loop leads hikers from the Kneipp spa Bad Iburg via Urberg, Heidhornberg, and Borgberg to a water-treading pool in the cozy town of Hagen in the Teutoburg Forest. From here, the route continues to Georgsmarienhütte to Lammersbrink with its viewing tower and to the Dörenberg, which also features a viewing tower and is the highest elevation of the Teutoburg Forest in the Osnabrück region at 331 m. After crossing Musenberg and Limberg, you return to Bad Iburg.
Note: The Ahornweg can also be started at any other point along the route.
Infrastructure and Signposting: Signposting is provided at junctions through destination signs of the Osnabrück Land hiking guidance system using insert and location signs. Between destination signs, marking signs or color markings measuring 10 x 10 cm are attached according to the specifications of the German Hiking Association.
Information boards provide an overview. Rest benches, rest areas, and lounge chairs offer regular opportunities to relax and catch your breath. With a total of five viewing towers, magnificent views open up over the southern Osnabrück region.
Terrain: The terrain is moderately hilly to partially flat. Especially in the area of the viewing towers, the wonderful views demand hiking with challenging climbs.
Hiker type: Ideal for hikers who appreciate attractive transitions between forest and field in a hilly landscape and also want to hike some challenging climbs. Divided into 6 routes, the Ahornweg offers the right hiking experience for every type of hiker. Challenging climbs, slightly hilly or flat – on the Ahornweg every hiker gets their money’s worth.
Author’s recommendation
When the first warm sun rays touch the forest floors along the Ahornweg after the long winter, you witness a unique natural spectacle. Early bloomers like wood anemone and corydalis awaken like a carpet to new life. Here, as a hiker, you can also draw new energy from the springtime nature of the Ahornweg to take home!
The lush bloom in the Freeden nature reserve near Bad Iburg is almost legendary and is related to our earth’s history, as the 120 million-year-old limestone forms the nutrient base for these special early bloomers!
A little later, the snow-white cherry blossoms, in beautiful contrast to the blue sky, make your walk on the Ahornweg feel like a journey through a <strongtrue natural idyll. Especially in Hagen a.T.W, the cherry is a special focus: here, not only is the preservation of historic varieties promoted, but also the sweet red fruits are processed into delicious products.
The subsequent blooming of wild garlic, with its intoxicatingly intense scent, heralds culinary spring specialties to which you should indulge yourself.
Information about the flowering status of corydalis and a rich program with entertaining tours and excursions is always provided timely on the website of TERRA.vita!

Actually, you are doing a coastal hike on the Ahornweg!!
Compared to the low mountain ranges further south, the Teutoburg Forest in the area of the Ahornweg is not particularly high. Its highest point reaches 331 meters. But a beach walk on the Ahornweg? How is that possible?
To understand this, take a closer look at the embankments and the small quarries along the path. Where the Ahornweg runs along the northern mountain ridge, the attentive hiker will repeatedly discover very sandy, yellow-brown rock. It weathers into sandy soil, on which blueberries, pines, and sometimes even heather like to grow.
But on the southern ridge, you notice an almost white limestone that is often used as gravel on the paths. It becomes slippery when it rains and provides a good base for some well-known plants like corydalis or wild garlic.
Still, no coast in sight, right? But yes! The sandstone on the northern slope is nothing other than finest beach sand! Around 120 million years ago, at the beginning of the Cretaceous period, waves lapped here against the shore and spread sand over many kilometers. If we had been here then, we might have had a good chance of spotting a dinosaur sunbathing.
If you take a closer look at the white limestone of the Teuto’s southern ridge, you’ll spot here and there small or larger fossilized shells. A clear sign that this rock is also linked to the sea: It was deposited as lime mud near the end of the Cretaceous on the seabed. The sea level had risen and flooded the old beach areas.
