Was wir hier zwischen den Fingern zu losem Sand zerreiben können, ist der sogenannte Osning-Sandstein. Als Osning wird der zentrale Teil des Teutoburger Waldes bezeichnet, in dem wir uns hier tatsächlich befinden.
Bei Sand denken die schlechtwetter-geplagten Norddeutschen schnell an Strand und Meer. Im Fall des Osning-Sandsteins liegen sie damit auch nicht falsch: Wo wir hier stehen, hätten wir vor rund 120 Millionen Jahren (in der unteren Kreidezeit) noch unter tropischer Sonne am Strand entlang laufen und dem Plätschern des Meeres lauschen können. Die Zeiten sind nun leider vorbei, den Strandsand hat uns die Erdgeschichte aber hinterlassen - zusammengebacken zum Osning-Sandstein.
