Rail & Trail "Slow Trail - Between the waters of the Bleistätter Moor"
We start our circular tour at Steindorf am Ossiacher See railroad station and after just a few minutes we walk along the edge of the extensive moorland landscape to Lake Ossiach. A short detour leads to the Steinhaus Domenig - a highlight of modern, rock-inspired architecture! This is also the starting point of the Slow Trail. Back at the moor, the real highlight begins: a wonderful dam path leads right through the valley and delights with lake water to the right and moor water to the left - an extraordinary moor experience! Two moor towers offer beautiful views of the species-rich natural jewel. At the southern edge of the valley, we walk uphill past rustling reeds and the "Wasserkante" platform. After the moorland road, we hike through a mosaic of lush fields in an arc back to the northern edge of the valley and to Steindorf am Ossiacher See railroad station.
What a contrast? Not at all. The Bleistätter Moor was once one of the largest moor areas in Carinthia. In the 1930s, it was drained and used for agriculture. Renaturation began in 2016 and the extraordinary moorland landscape was created - a natural jewel in the middle of civilization!
