Rail & Trail "Dreiländereck - summit tour through three countries"
Now the enjoyable high-altitude circular hike begins. We can already see our summit along the border ridge to the west. The path leads briefly down into the saddle to the Dreiländereck hut, then we hike down the steep Slovenian mountain flank on forest paths through dense spruce forest. Near the lowest point, a forest oasis opens up a fantastic view of the bold rock formations of the Julian Alps - alpine Slovenia. At the lowest point, we cross the border into Bella Italia. A near-natural tractor path now leads us uphill through a lonely forest trench - here you can experience mountain solitude. After the forest oasis at the saddle with a bivouac hut, we head over wonderful forest paths to the Madonna Rosa forest wayside shrine. An old military building there is a reminder of past war times. A short detour takes us to the secluded forest oasis of the Madonna della Neve chapel - truly a place of contemplation. We hike along the mountain flank on a gravel road to the border ridge. Now the final summit assault begins: an atmospheric, partly steep path leads up the Grenzrücken to the summit of the Dreiländereck (1,508 m). Congratulations! This is where Austria, Slovenia and Italy meet. Magnificent panoramic views give an impressive impression of the diverse fascination of the Alps-Adriatic region.
The descent is via green ski slopes to the Dreiländereck Hütte and then back to the starting point on the same route as the ascent.
Author’s recommendation
For connoisseurs: Arnoldstein train station is well connected by bus to the valley station of the Dreiländereck cable car, so that the walking time can be shortened. For information see "Public transport".
ID required due to border crossing: On this hike you cross the borders to Slovenia and Italy. It is therefore necessary to carry a valid passport or identity card.
