RadLust loop EisenMacher
Once, the Birkenfelder Land was an important center of the iron industry. This is still hinted at by the old Abentheuer ironworks, which is passed on this cycling loop. Along the southern edge of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, the path leads with a wonderful view over the land to Rinzenberg, with its pretty old farmhouses. At the Sauerbrunnen near Oberhambach, a rest with a short walk to the Petersquelle is worthwhile. Once there was a spa here; guests drank the iron-rich water of the Sauerbrunnen, which was also sent worldwide as healing water.
The route leads through the picturesque Hambach valley, then continues over Elchweiler to Schmißberg. A rest at the Sirona Pavilion a few hundred meters beyond Schmißberg is recommended. From here, the route goes past the reconstructed Roman road back to Birkenfeld. At the Landesmuseum, among other things, the history of the iron industry from Celtic times to the industrial age is told.
