State Museum Birkenfeld

The museum of the local history association in the Birkenfeld district was built in 1910 in the style of a Roman country house. The inauguration of the "Landesmuseum" took place on October 17, 1910 in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich August von Oldenburg.

The Society for Classical Studies in the Principality of Birkenfeld, which was founded in 1843 and is now the Society for Local History in the Birkenfeld district, was proud to present its extensive archaeological collection to the public. In order to ensure the professional storage and exhibition of the constantly growing collection, the association expanded the building in 1954/55 and 1966/67 with additions.

From 2005 to 2007 the museum was extensively renovated and modernized and expanded again with the construction of a connecting wing with a foyer. The Birkenfeld Land Tourist Information Center has also been integrated into the Birkenfeld Museum since 2007. The renovation and conversion measures were made possible by financial support from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Birkenfeld community.

Permanent exhibitions focusing on "Celts and Romans", "Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachers", "Ironworks in the Birkenfeld District", "Old Classrooms around 1930" and the Oldenburg period are shown.

The numerous exhibits of the collection on various topics are presented in the annually changing special exhibitions and on days of action. The visitor encounters a varied offer. In addition, the Landesmuseum Birkenfeld offers museum educational offers for school classes upon request.
