The bike route leads from St. Veit/Glan past Althofen to Carinthia's oldest town, Friesach, and further to Dürnstein in Styria
Bike culture, 3-city culture, beer culture, and railway culture – the bike route leads along the "Central Carinthian Cultural Cycle Path" from the sunny city of St. Veit an der Glan past Althofen with its widely visible old town complex to Carinthia's oldest city, the castle town of Friesach. The Hirt brewery and genuine Gurktal narrow gauge railway romance are just two of the highlights along the route.
A rest in the Hirt brew cellar is recommended. In Friesach, a visit to the old town, the living castle construction, and the Craigher chocolate experience and demonstration manufactory is worthwhile.

Roadbook
The route follows the Carinthian state cycle paths, with additional signage to help you find your way at relevant points!
The sections in detail:
- St. Veit an der Glan "Fox Palace" – St. Veit an der Glan station
- R7 "Friesach Route": St. Veit North – Mölbling
- R7B "Kappler Route": (branch) Mölbling – Treibach-Althofen station – Mölbling
- R7 "Friesach Route": Mölbling – Friesach
- Friesach (Grabenring/Bahnhofstraße junction) – Friesach station
- return by train
The Fox Palace in St. Veit an der Glan forms the starting point of this route. Also visit the St. Veit museum and enjoy the flair of the old town. The route leads past the station to the R7 "Friesach Route," which you follow northwards out of town. Right at the start, the route climbs steadily alongside the expressway on a cycle path. Only from the driving safety center northwest of the road does it become nearly flat and faster. After a longer woodland section and twice passing under the expressway, you soon have a view of the hilltop old town of Althofen with the mighty mountain backdrop of the Saualpe and Seetaler Alps in the distance. If you feel like it, in Mölbling there is the possibility to reach Althofen via the R7B "Kappler Route" branch and visit the Auer von Welsbach museum. A tip for connoisseurs: ride the section between Althofen and Pöckstein-Zwischenwässern on the Gurktal museum railway and enjoy genuine narrow gauge railway romance! From Mölbling, the route runs parallel to the expressway, first on side streets, then on the cycle path to Pöckstein-Zwischenwässern. Shortly after Pöckstein-Zwischenwässern, you cross the Gurk over a covered wooden bridge, ride a short stretch on the main road and ascend a steep hairpin bend to Hirt in the Metnitz valley. The cycle path leads you directly through the area of the famous Hirt brewery. Well fortified, you continue on side streets slightly uphill through Micheldorf towards the castle town of Friesach. In Friesach, turn right before the castle ditch onto the cycle path. At the latest here, the impressive castle complex becomes visible. Before leaving the cycle path at the bridge into the old town to the right towards the station, a visit to Carinthia's oldest town with the city museum on Petersberg and the living castle construction experience is definitely worthwhile!
