A challenging gravel route for endurance riders: starting in Spittal an der Drau, this tour follows in the footsteps of historic gold panners, taking you all the way round the Goldeck Group. Highlights include the climb from Lind, the turquoise waters of Lake Weissensee and the fast-paced descent into the Gitsch Valley. A perfect combination of physical challenge and natural beauty in Carinthia’s Drau Valley.

Seeing dollar signs? Then you’ve caught the bug! Because this challenging gravel bike tour takes you from Spittal/Drau across Lake Weißensee and around Mount Goldeck – which isn’t called that for nothing. Passing the ruins of the once-mighty Ortenburg, the route initially heads upstream through the Drau Valley. Along the way lies the village of Sachsenburg. Its name is not derived from the Saxons, but from the ‘Saxe’, a special wooden vessel formerly used for panning for gold. The gold-themed journey continues: in the Goldeck Group, named after the mountain we are circling, gold was also mined centuries ago. And some markings on the mysterious Hundskirche rock, which we reach after the ‘cool’ Weißensee and the secluded Farchtensee, are also said to be connected to the search for the precious metal. Along some of the streams in this area, gold panners can still be found today – better equipped than in the days of the ‘Saxe’, but just as secretive. Adventurers are reluctant to share.

    Author’s recommendation

A trip up to the Goldeck by gondola is highly recommended.

    Roadbook

The tour starts in Spittal an der Drau, ideally near Porcia Castle. The route initially follows the flat Drau Cycle Path (R1) upstream in a north-westerly direction. Passing St. Peter in Holz and Lendorf, the route leads on to Möllbrücke and Sachsenburg. In Sachsenburg, you cross the Drau. On the southern bank of the river, the route now heads back a short distance eastwards to Lind im Drautal. This is where the challenging section begins: the route leaves the valley floor and leads steeply uphill via Fellbach and Gajach towards the south.Once the climb has been conquered, the route reaches the western part of the municipality of Stockenboi and, shortly afterwards, the eastern shore of Lake Weissensee and the village of Techendorf. The route now runs along the southern shore, or rather above the lake, through the Weissensee Nature Park towards the west to Naggl and on to Schattseite. From Lake Weissensee, the route descends via a downhill section to Weißbriach in the Gitschtal valley. In Weißbriach, the route turns sharply eastwards. Passing through St. Lorenzen in the Gitschtal valley, the next climb takes you over the Kreuzberg (near the eastern shore of Lake Weissensee, but this time keeping to the south). From Kreuzberg, the route continues eastwards through the village of Zlan and follows the road through the Ziebl Valley and Stockenboi Valley. The descent takes you past Tragail and Aichach back into the wide Drau Valley. At St. Peter, the circuit rejoins the familiar route and leads the final few kilometres back to the starting point in Spittal an der Drau.
