The landscape is breathtaking: The high valley in Goms is at an average of 1300 meters and therefore snow-sure. The varied trail leads from Oberwald to Niederwald, mostly along the Rotten river, past the rustic Goms villages Obergesteln, Ulrichen, and the main town Münster-Geschinen.
The route is very varied, running through forests and across wide fields – always along the Rotten, as the young Rhone is called here. Since the trail is rather flat, it is especially suitable for the leisurely ski wanderer who mainly wants to enjoy the landscape. Due to its high altitude, the trail is also used by professionals for training. The scenery is framed by dense protective forests and snow-white peaks.
Many restaurants with Valais cuisine lure along the villages by the trail.
Author’s recommendation
Complete the Rottenloipe in sections. You can board the train at any of the rustic Goms mountain villages and return to the starting point as you wish.
