GUTEN TAG, MEIN NAME IST BIEL

So um 1277 wurde ich noch Buele genannt. Da tönt doch Biel bedeutend freundlicher. Übrigens: Es wäre lieb von dir, wenn du das E in meinem Namen auch aussprechen würdest. Wie Gluringen, Selkingen und Ritzingen war ich Teil des Viertels Grafschaft, dessen historisches, kirchliches und gerichtliches Zentrum ich schon ab 1374 war. Nirgends sonst im Goms findet sich ein derart ausgeprägter Dorfplatz mit stolzen Häuserzeilen, wie ich ihn vor der Kirche habe. Einmalig sind auch einige meiner Dorfteile mit Namen «im Himmel», «in dr Hell» (nicht Hölle sondern eher vom althocheutschen halda, was Bergabhang bedeutet) und «uf em Schloss». Speziell auch der weltliche Steinbau, das «Grafehüs».

Die Natur hat mich und meine Bewohner über die Jahrhunderte geprägt. Auf der einen Seite forderte in alten Zeiten die Bodenknappheit meine Häuser eng aneinandergereiht an den Hang zu bauen. Andererseits formten mich die Naturgefahren. 1827 wurde die Hälfte von mir Opfer einer Lawine. Ein Gedenkstein auf dem Friedhof erinnert noch daran. Seit 2000 schützt mich und meinen Nachbarn Selkingen ein Damm vor den Launen des Wallibachs.

Die Neuzeit hielt schon früh bei mir Einzug. Denn seit 1915 bin ich über meinen Bahnhof mit der Eisenbahn an die weite Welt angebunden. Es ist mir eine Freude, mich dir vorzustellen.
