From the starting point, head briefly westwards towards Bieberstein and then through the Milseburg tunnel to the Milseburg. Continue to Rupsroth. From here continue southwards to Abtsroda. Up to this point the ascent was steady but moderate - now begins the climb to the Wasserkuppe. After visiting the summit, continue on the road southwards to the B284, there turn left towards Obernhausen. From here you can switch back to a cycle path parallel to the federal road to Gerstfeld. After a short stretch on the main road, turn right, continuing again on cycle paths past Maiersbach and the Wachtkueppel forest inn, until you reach the L3330. Take this road to Poppenhausen and then continue on cycle paths or side streets northwards to Friesenhausen. Then the direction changes to northeast towards Wülferts and then back to north before you meet again the cycle path near Bieberstein where you started in the morning.
