Zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen war dies der Ort für zahlreiche Neuerungen im Segelfliegen. Studenten von der nah gelegenen Technischen Universität Darmstadt starteten hier schon 1911 ihre ersten Flugversuche. Doch erst nach 1918, als aufgrund der Restriktionen des Versailler Vertrages das Betreiben von motorisierten Flugkörpern in Deutschland verboten war, wuchs das Interesse am Segelfliegen zunehmend. Oskar Ursinus tat dem Rechnung und baute 1924 das erste Vereinshaus auf der Wasserkuppe.
