For aspiring Alpine crossers, the Sauerland is the perfect training ground. The proof: On this route, you’ll ride over a dozen of the Sauerland’s 20 peaks that are over 800 meters high. Are Alpine passes much higher? Maybe, but you’ll only ride two a day at most!
Even the Ettelsberg in Willingen gets your blood pumping. From there, cyclists face one tough climb after another, including the Langenberg, which, at 843 meters, is the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia. If you can still go full throttle on the Kahler Asten, you’ve done everything right in your winter training. But as you continue on via Ziegenhelle, Hillekopf, and Hoppernkopf, even the least experienced rider will realize that this route is in no way inferior to the tough Alpine cross stages.
