The cycle route leads via Monschau to Einruhr, along the Rursee through the Rur Eifel, past Düren, Jülich, and through the Heinsberg region to Roermond. The route is as varied as the course of the river: sometimes it flows gently, sometimes it leaves rushing heights behind. On the edge of the RurUfer cycle path, the history of water comes to life: cloth manufacturing, dams, paper production – interesting museums await the cyclist to bring the water experience closer. The landscape offers pure nature experience with the unique High Fens in Europe as well as the still young Eifel National Park. The train stations along the route allow individual route and stage planning and also enable some single stages to be experienced as day trips.
Highlights along the route:
- High Fens
- Old town Monschau
- Rursee with dam
- Eifel National Park
- Art Nouveau power plant Heimbach
- Buntsandstein rock formations near Zerkall
- Hengebach Castle, Nideggen Castle

- Burgau Castle
- Leopold Hoesch Museum Düren
- Brückenkopf Park and Citadel Jülich

Roadbook
More than half of the total route is flat. Hilly sections with partly steep inclines are found only in the upper course of the Rur. The surface on secondary roads, farm roads, and riverside paths is mostly unpaved, with only a few asphalted paths. The RurUfer cycle path runs mostly away from roads with exceptions in the upper Rur valley; Düren-Roermond.

Public transport
Access options to Kalterherberg
Reaching the actual starting point at Signal de Botrange by public transport is relatively difficult. Traveling by public transport including bicycle transport makes particular sense on Sundays and public holidays. Then it is advisable to travel from Aachen by bicycle bus, which during the summer months transports bicycles via Roetgen to Kalterherberg station (direct connection) in a specially designed trailer to the national park region. More information can be found at: www.avv.de/rad
Alternatively, from Aachen main station, you can also be brought to the starting point of the RurUfer cycle path by an experienced shuttle service. (Further info about the shuttle service can be obtained from Rureifel Tourismus e.V, An der Laag 4, 52396 Heimbach Tel.: +49 24 46 / 80 579-0, Email:info@.rureifel-tourismus.de, Homepage:)
To return to the starting point after the tour, travel by train via Mönchengladbach back to Aachen. From there continue on the above-described connection to Kalterherberg.
