Pilis Bike Pap-rét route (Telgárthy-rét, Visegrád P+B)
Due to its location and character, Telgárthy-rét is truly versatile. It's suitable for picnics, children’s play, camping, dog programs, and much more. However, in our case, it will be the starting point of a cycling route since it is easily accessible on the edge of popular Visegrád and has ample parking.
From the fitness management standpoint, it couldn’t be easier, as we ascend continuously until Pap-rét, then after the rest there, simply coast back to the starting point.
The road surface is consistent with average or better quality asphalt throughout, so virtually any bike can complete the route. This and the absence of traffic make this section of the Visegrád Hills exceptionally popular.
Author’s recommendation
- After the route, it is worth exploring Telgárthy-rét, as there are many sights to see. The Trout Lake, the Ördögmalom waterfall, the stream, and the restaurant all help to spend some extra time alongside cycling.

Description:
Telgárthy-rét - Pap-rét
- Surface: asphalt
Leaving the clearing, we start our long climb through the forest, as the first approx. 7 kilometers of the route require overcoming more than 300 meters of elevation. After the barrier, cool air may greet us from the Kaán Károly spring, but the steady incline of about 5% will surely warm us up quickly. It's worth enjoying the endless tranquility and the picturesque scenery while pedaling, as cycling in such an ideal environment is rare. Roads closed to public traffic, relatively good quality asphalt, beautiful forest, a stimulating but not too steep climb: what more could a cyclist want? The switchbacks cutting into the hillside soften the climb several times and provide an interesting panorama of the road ahead. After the third hairpin turn, the incline pleasantly eases, allowing for a short breather.
After the gentler stretch, only one kilometer remains until we reach our next destination. A prominent barrier and a small pond at the end of a long straight indicate that we are at Pap-rét, where it is worth refreshing, resting, and enjoying the charm of the place.
Pap-rét - Telgárthy-rét
- Surface: asphalt
Here we can take a short break and refresh ourselves, then leave the junction heading north, the way we came from. The easier part of the route awaits us, as the asphalt path will descend all the way to the border of Visegrád. Following the hillside, the pleasantly winding road will surely impress even the most discerning cyclists. The only caution is to avoid entering blind curves at too high a speed, as not only other cyclists but also forestry vehicles may approach from the opposite direction. In the second half of the descent, we first approach the Apátkúti Valley running below to our left, then continue parallel to it for a while. Shortly before Telgárthy-rét, we can spot the area's best-known water source, the Kaán Károly spring, on the lower left. Named after the famous forest engineer active in the early 20th century, the spring was developed as early as 1938. Its always cool and fresh water is drinkable at your own risk.
A few hundred meters past the spring, the landscape opens up ahead, and shortly after, we return to our starting point at the northern end of the Apátkúti Valley. At the end of our route, it is worth taking a closer look around here, as a neat small forest resting area protected by surrounding hills and peaks has been created. The winding course of the Apátkúti stream, decorated with rocky outcrops along the western edge of the area, makes the surroundings truly picturesque. At both ends of the meadow, there are trout ponds fed by its water. It's important to mention the nearby Ördögmalom waterfall and the restaurant with the same name, which offer opportunities for longer relaxation and rest. A few hundred meters after the valley exit, we find the streets of Visegrád, so we can even cycle there if we feel like it.
