The alpha of the local cycling routes, the gateway drug to cycling in the forest. The route leading back and forth from the Skanzen to Pap-rét is simple but promises many experiences despite the short distance.

A practical route, as the parking lot next to the Skanzen can be reached from Budapest in relatively little time, but if choosing public transport (H5 suburban railway), we can significantly reduce the distance and start the climbs without cold legs.

At Pap-rét, the destination and turnaround point of our route, although it lies just a few kilometers from several inhabited places, it feels as if we are deep in the forest away from the big world. The atmospheric forester's lodge and birdsong provide an ideal backdrop for resting. If we bring refreshments, we can consume them at designated resting areas with tables and benches.

Due to its relatively short distance, even beginners can tackle the route, while the elevation gain provides a serious sense of achievement for everyone.

    Author’s recommendation

    • If we are not afraid of road traffic and don't want to ride back on the same road, we can return to the starting point via the forestry road leading towards Hegytető, then following route 1116.

    • Always proceed with heightened attention during descents, especially around blind corners. On weekends, there can be significant traffic, where we must be attentive to pedestrians, children, and dog walkers as well!

    Roadbook

    Itinerary:

    • From the Skanzen to Pap-rét, we must follow the green cycling sign all the way
    • The same back from Pap-rét.

    Description:

    Skanzen - Pap-rét

    • Terrain: asphalt

A few hundred meters after departure, a barrier marks the beginning of forestry roads closed to public traffic, partly thanks to the military activities of the more intense decades of the previous century. After bypassing the barrier, it is worth shifting down and pedaling hard because we start immediately with the steepest part of the section. After passing the two switchbacks, the terrain gradually becomes gentler. The intimate, quiet road winding through the forest is bordered by smaller woodland clearings and meadows, and then we can enjoy an increasingly beautiful view on the left. The numerous branches show that we are in an area active both from a forestry and hunting perspective. It was already considered as such decades ago – this is reminded by the rain shelter called the Horthy garage, which we will soon see on the right.

After the switchback, the ascent becomes flatter as we roll by the base of the steep slope of the towering Nagy-Berseg on our right above us. On the left, the creek below winds conspicuously, thundering loudly in spring but it can dry out completely on long summer days. After a straight section, a guardrail indicates that we will soon reach Pap-rét. Only two or three more bends must be overcome before the junction of forestry roads appears after another barrier, along with the forester's lodge.

    Pap-rét - Skanzen

    • Terrain: asphalt

This intersection is the junction of asphalted forestry roads crossing the area, nestled between Visegrád, Szentendre, and Pilisszentlászló. Opposite the forester's lodge, a developed resting place with benches and a table welcomes tourists. After resting and refreshing, we set off again and begin the descent on the already traveled route. Following the green cycling sign, we slowly roll along the Sztaravoda creek. We need to be careful because after forestry work, the road surface is often gravelly or covered with wood chips; other times rainwater or machines move mud in from the joining dozer roads.

Therefore, and also for the sake of other cyclists and hikers, we should descend the bike cautiously! We only need to pay attention to this, less so to navigation, as the asphalt path clearly marks the direction. Finally, a combination of a sharp right and left bend signals that we are gradually reaching the Skanzen again. After bypassing the barrier, there are only a few hundred meters left, and we are back at the starting point of the route.
