The Isar Cycle Route leads from the state border at Scharnitz past Mittenwald around the Karwendel mountains, finally through the romantic valley on a (free for cyclists) toll road to the Sylvensteinsee (partly on the less busy federal road here). Continuing past Lenggries, it leaves the Alps along the mountain river and through the charming pre-alpine area of the Oberland, along the well-known protected nature reserve Pupplinger Au, into the state capital Munich, leaving it on absolutely quiet floodplain paths and joining the Danube Cycle Route after crossing magnificent floodplain forests near Niederalteich. The cycle path runs south of Wolfratshausen on low-traffic roads in hilly terrain, otherwise mostly close to the river and away from roads on generally well-maintained paths. A largely family-friendly cycling experience with a contrast between peaceful nature and lively historic Isar towns.
