Our route starts in Mittenwald. Not far from here is the clear mountain river Isar's source. Today we follow it to
Lenggries. On the way, we pass, among other places, the Sylvenstein reservoir, a perfect spot for a short
stopover. Especially in spring, summer, and autumn, the surroundings and the shining
blue lake resemble a Canadian landscape. From autumn, sporty cyclists have the option to choose an alternative route
over the Rauchenberg. Continuing along the Isar river, the path passes the small villages of Fleck and Wegscheid
to Lenggries, our stage destination.
Stage 2: Lenggries to Gelting (43 km)
Today’s route first leads us from Lenggries along the Isar riverbank, with its beautiful nature and landscape, to
Bad Tölz. Especially the impressive old town of Bad Tölz, with its historic market street, is worth a visit. Small cafés
and traditional taverns offer Bavarian specialties. Refreshed, we continue from Bad Tölz past the villages of Königsdorf, Geretsried, and Gartenberg until we finally reach
the Loisach-Isar Canal near Gelting.
Stage 3: Gelting to Ismaning (47 km)
Schäftlarn Abbey is a highlight of today’s route from Gelting to Ismaning. We should not miss a look inside this historic Benedictine monastery or the adjacent monastery shop, which sells products made on site.
Afterwards, the route continues through the Grünwalder Forest directly to Grünwald. Now we are already at the gates of the Bavarian capital Munich. Munich offers many sights, e.g., the Bavaria Film Studios, Hellabrunn Zoo, the Deutsches Museum, and much more. We continue through the English Garden, Munich’s so-called “Central Park,” past the Chinese Tower, through Schwabing to our stage destination Ismaning.
Stage 4: Ismaning to Landshut (59 km)
Today we continue to Freising. The following section from Moosburg to Landshut impresses especially with its untouched and authentic idyll, from which we are only pulled back into modern civilization every few kilometers via small bridges. This route also includes the nature reserve “Bird sanctuary Middle Isar reservoirs.” From Moosburg there is also a second variant to get to Landshut. This leads us along the high bank on the hills above the Isar. In Landshut, a visit to the historic center and a detour to Trausnitz Castle are highly recommended.
Stage 5: Landshut to Plattling (67 km)
From Landshut, we first ride to Niederaichbach and then on to Dingolfing. Dingolfing offers not only a scenic old town but also an interesting museum, providing a perfect insight into the city’s and industrial history. A tour of the BMW factories is also highly recommended. From here, we continue on an unpaved path to Landau. The final destination of our Isar cycle route, the town of Plattling, is now within reach. To get there, we take either the route along the Isar’s banks or the alternative inland route. Plattling is a very hospitable town, which since 2009 has been a partner community of Scharnitz, the source of the Isar, making it a worthy place to end your Isar cycle route tour.
Optional Stage 6: Plattling to the Danube and back (23 km)
The highlight of this stage is the Isar estuary area, a splendid floodplain landscape with an interesting information center. It stretches from Plattling to the mouth of the Danube between Deggendorf and Moos.
