Rureifel-Tourismus e. V.
Duke Wilhelm should still feel at home in his residence town Jülich after 400 years. Among other things, he was responsible for the construction of the still preserved citadel with residence castle and the layout of the inner-city development. The French and Prussians also left their architectural marks, but the layout of the inner city has remained unchanged to this day and represents an ideal Renaissance town layout from the 16th century. As a research town, Jülich has made a name for itself far beyond the borders, and the Research Centre is one of the leading institutions in Germany. In its institutes and competence centers, scientists investigate complex topics such as fuel cell development, biotechnology, structural change, quantum technology, and currently Covid-19 research.
A notable testimony of Jewish life in the Düren district can be visited in Titz-Rödingen. The synagogue built in 1841, together with the residential house of the Jewish Ullmann family, is the only building complex of this kind largely preserved in its original state in the western Rhineland. It now houses the LVR Cultural House Landsynagogue Rödingen.
Author’s recommendation
On hot days, a detour to the bathing beach at the Barmener See is advisable. A visit to the Brückenkopf Park in Jülich is worthwhile for children.
