From Villach, cycle a short distance on the Drau Cycle Path before switching to the Gailtal Cycle Path. At Erlendorf, leave the Gailtal Cycle Path toward Arnoldstein, then continue to the Italian border. At Thörl-Maglern, leave Austria and reach Tarvis. From here, continue on the cross-border railway path to Jesenice. Cycle past the Weissenfelser Lakes / Laghi di Fusine, Planica, and Kranjska Gora amidst pristine nature. Along the route, experience breathtaking views of the river valley and surrounding mountains. The section between Resiutta and Pietragliata is particularly filled with tunnels and bridges from which you can admire the stunning landscape.

In Jesenice, take advantage of the Karawankensprinter train service to return to your starting point in Villach.

The route is fully paved and from Tarvis passes through a scenic alpine landscape between the foothills of the Karawanks and the Julian Alps. Five large iron bridges and a massive viaduct are part of the cycle path, which runs at the foot of the Triglav massif (2864 m, Slovenia's highest mountain).

    Author’s recommendation

    Tips and suggestions
