The approx. 90 km long cycle path crosses the beautiful and varied landscapes of the Palatinate: starting from Worms, the Rhine plain shaped by agricultural use and viticulture, from Ramsen the northern Palatinate Forest Nature Park with the Eiswoog, an idyllic forest lake, until north-west of Kaiserslautern where the Westrich with its hilly landscape begins. Larger climbs are to be overcome only on the approx. 5 km long section in the Palatinate Forest, between the Eiswoog and Alsenborn.
The namesake of the cycle path is none other than Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa, who significantly shaped the history of the Palatinate in the 12th century. Besides numerous castle ruins, the imperial palace in Kaiserslautern is one of the most important testimonies of his activity. Many more sights and resting opportunities are located along the route.
The route logo shows the stylized Emperor Barbarossa. The model was the statue above the north portal of Worms Cathedral.

Safety information
Our cycling routes often run along paths that are shared with others. Therefore, we ask for always considerate and friendly conduct. Winemakers, farmers, and foresters use the farm roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work (also on weekends) and always have priority. Due to work operations and/or weather conditions, these paths may sometimes be considerably dirtier. Particular caution is also required when cycling on the (mostly quiet and lightly trafficked) roads in and around the Palatinate villages.Tips and suggestions

Roadbook
Requirement: Longer climbs are only to be overcome on the approx. 5 km long section in the Palatinate Forest between the Eiswoog and Alsenborn. Otherwise, consistently flat route or very evenly moderate climbs.
Route guidance:
- Predominantly on forest and farm roads
- Rail trail sections: approx. 5 km between Heppenheim and Worms-Zollhaus (bound gravel surface, former railway line Grünstadt – Worms)
Surface qualities:
- Mostly asphalted sections, in the Palatinate Forest foothills north of Kaiserslautern as well as between Alsenborn and Ramsen also partially coarser bound gravel surfaces.
Route overview:
- Glan-Münchweiler - Kaiserslautern 27 km: "Northern Palatinate Highlands in a gentle version": Through the Mohrbach valley between the northern foothills of the Palatinate Forest and the southern hills of the Northern Palatinate Highlands, the Barbarossa Cycle Route takes its predominantly moderate course.
- Kaiserslautern - Eisenberg 32 km: "Mineral resources stage": Between the Palatinate Forest and the region around the Donnersberg, mineral resources have been mined since time immemorial, and there is a long tradition of smelting. The cycle route touches some of these locations and challenges you noticeably over the last hill before the Rhine valley section.
- Eisenberg - Worms 29 km: "Vineyards and Rhine plain": Initially still dense forests, then wide vineyards and finally the garden landscapes in the Rhine plain shape this stage.
The route in the cycle network: The Barbarossa Cycle Route connects the Rhine Cycle Route in the east with the Glan-Blies Cycle Route in the west and thus provides a connection to Saarland. To the north, it connects to the Lauter Cycle Route and Alsenz Cycle Route; to the south, to the Sickinger Mills Cycle Route, Palatinate Forest route, and German Wine Route with the Kraut-und-Rüben Cycle Route.
