The Pigne d'Arolla is one of the most frequented summits in this area. It is also an easy and rewarding goal for ski tourers.
Unusually, the mountain shows strong glaciation to the south.
The name is clear: pigne (French le pigne) originates from the patois and means "peak." Arolla is the name of the valley village (patois: aroula = larch/pine).

Glacier travel - makes roping up absolutely necessary.Roadbook
From the Cabane des Vignettes, briefly descend to the Col des Vignettes and from there directly south over the glacier arm into the small saddle west of point 3159. Then ascend northwest along the rock ridge (trail traces) until just before its end. Now ascend eastward over the glacier to the hollow at 3650m. From the hollow directly onto the east ridge and over this to the summit.
From the summit, descend directly to the firn saddle south of the summit and continue southwest to the Col du Breney. Then curve northward to a firn shoulder, descend steeply on the west side to another glacier plateau, and again curve northward to the Col de Tsijiore Nouve. Descend the Glacier de Tsena Refien to the north from here; the first meters are quite harmless, then the descent goes through a wild maze of crevasses in a zigzag into the glacier basin below point 3152. Follow the glacier always downstream along the right orographic edge until at about 2750m you meet the trail traces to the Pas de Chevre. Follow the traces first along the flat right glacier edge until the trails steeply lead to the start of the ladders to the pass. Ascend the ladders to the pass.
From the pass, descend the marked trail eastwards towards Arolla (signposted). At about 2400m, you reach the old, dilapidated alpine hut La Remointse. Slightly below the hut, leave the well-developed path and follow the narrow trail to the managed alpine hut Les Tsijiores Nouves (2166m). The remaining trail leads over a broad path back to the parking lot above Arolla.
