The ladders on the Pas de Chevres pass are justifiably scary for many people. This pass is high, it is remote, it is rocky and it is very steep. And yes, you need to climb a pair of nearly vertical ladders bolted to the rock face for a climb of about 80-100 ft. But they are not as bad as they look. They’re very secure, completely rebuilt in 2014, and are the safest way across this steep ridge. See the ladders yourself and make up your own mind, but the ladders are our recommendation.
If you’re not up for the ladders, the nearby and slightly higher Col de Riedmatten does not feature ladders. It is still a very steep, gritty ascent up a narrow gully to a tiny notch in the ridge. Also not easy. If the trail is wet or icy at all, you should not attempt Riedmatten, which has nothing to hold onto to help in case you slip.
