Cistercian Monastic Landscapes Connecting Europe
Exploration routes following the footsteps of the Cistercians
Cisterscapes is a transnational project of the Bamberg district and the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection, aiming to inspire people to see the landscape with new eyes: Hiking through monastic landscapes means discovering the footprints that monasteries have left in forests and fields since the Middle Ages.
The Cistercian order extensively shaped the landscape from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. From Burgundy, the Cistercians settled throughout Europe, establishing monasteries in the solitude of swampy valleys, cultivating and settling the land. The monastic landscapes still show many features that recall the monks' activities: old roads and pilgrimage routes, wayside shrines, field structures and names, forestry and clearing islands, vineyards and terraced fields, hydraulic structures, mills, large farmsteads (granges) with their block fields, fish farming, pastoral landscapes, and much more.
"Cisterscapes - Cistercian landscapes connecting Europe" (Project 2019-2022)
The transnational LEADER cooperation project serves to network and enhance tourism of 17 monastic landscapes in five countries. The project partners from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Poland jointly apply under the direction of the transnational coordinator, the Bamberg district, for the European Heritage Label designation, category "Cultural Landscape." Theme: Cistercian Monastic Landscape.
The long-distance trail "Way of the Cistercians" has been developed since 2019 as a major joint networking project. It will run over 5,000 kilometers across Europe and initially end in the west at the mother monastery Citeaux in France, the cradle of the Cistercian order. The "Way of the Cistercians" follows existing paths and can be hiked in both directions. It not only connects the 17 monastic landscapes with each other but also links numerous important sights in the respective regions.
