Das 1133 im Tal der Wondreb gegründete Kloster mit seiner doppeltürmigen Stiftsbasilika und den mächtigen Klosterbauten dominiert den Ort.

Um das Jahr 1133 gründete Markgraf Diepold III. das Kloster Waldsassen und stattete es mit Besitzungen aus, darunter umfangreiche Klosterwaldungen (Stiftsberge). Den Gründungskonvent bildeten Zisterziensermönche aus Volkenroda, die ein geschlossenesHerrschaftsgebiet aufbauen, das Stiftland.

In dem schwach besiedelten Gebiet bildete sich durch Rodungen eine geschlossene hochmittelalterliche Siedlungslandschaft mit 37 planmäßig angelegten Dörfern und Fluren heraus, z.B. Münchenreuth mit seiner Hufenflur. Um das Kloster entstanden Klosterhöfe mit umgebender Großblockflur, von denen einige erhalten sind, und die typischen Vierseithöfe, charakterisiert durch einen umgebenden Bestand an alten Bäumen. Die Waldsassener Mönche bauten zudem eines der größten Teichgebiete in Europa aus, indem sumpfige Gegenden urbar gemacht wurden. Der im Oberen Stadtweiher von Tirschenreuth gelegene Fischhof bildete das Steuerungszentrum der klösterlichen Teichwirtschaft. Zahlreiche Mühlen und Hämmer entstanden. Von einst ca. 10.000 Teichen existieren noch über 4000.

Die frühbarocke Klosteranlage Waldsassen beherrscht das Wondrebtal. Die durch einen Stationsweg mit dem Kloster verbundene frühbarocke Wallfahrtskirche Kappl ist landschaftswirksam. Der von Eger kommende Wallfahrtsweg und die weiten Blickbezüge nach Böhmen sind einzigartig. In einer außergewöhnlichen Dichte wurden Wallfahrtsstätten, Dorfkirchen, Wegkapellen, Marterln und Bildstöcke (Stiftlandsäulen) errichtet, eine Sakrallandschaft entstand. 1864 wurde das Kloster mit Schwestern aus Seligenthal wieder- besiedelt.1925 zur Abtei erhoben, sind die Zisterzienserinnen bis heute erfolgreich tätig.
