The Karlstein castle ruin is located above the Thumsee on a steep rock and can only be reached by a long metal staircase on the last section of a hiking trail. In front of the castle ruin today lies the Catholic pilgrimage church St. Pankraz. In place of this baroque chapel built between 1687 and 1689, the Pankraz rock probably housed an outer castle in the High Middle Ages.

The artificial lake is dammed by the Kibling weir in the municipality of Schneizlreuth. The dam was built between 1910 and 1913 to power the hydroelectric plants on the Saalach River. Today, Deutsche Bahn uses the facility—which is a designated historic landmark and for which an additional residual-flow hydroelectric power plant was newly built—to generate electricity for the rail system and private households.
