In the footsteps of Elias Holl through Augsburg
A city walking route in the footsteps of Augsburg's most famous city builder - not just for architecture fans!
Elias Holl (1573–1646) is considered one of the most important German-speaking architects of the early 17th century. As city master builder he significantly shaped Augsburg – with representative buildings that still shape the cityscape today and reflect the heyday of the imperial city. His style combines Renaissance with early Baroque elements, clearly structured and at the same time representative.
The themed route leads to the most important stations of his work:
- Rotes Tor – the oldest preserved city gate of Augsburg, part of the impressive historical city fortifications that Holl also designed.
- Heilig-Geist-Spital – an ensemble with a long tradition of caring for the poor and sick, structurally expanded and shaped by Holl’s hand; today home of the Augsburg Puppet Theater.
- Zeughaus – a defensively representative arsenal that illustrated the military strength of the imperial city.
- Elias-Holl-Platz – the square dedicated to him with a monument honors the master builder in the midst of "his" city.
- Town hall with Perlachturm – Holl’s masterpiece: Augsburg’s town hall is one of the most important secular buildings of the Renaissance north of the Alps. Together with the neighboring Perlachturm it forms the widely visible heart of the city.
This route leads not only through the historical center of Augsburg but also through the era of a self-confident imperial city, whose architecture still impressively reflects Holl’s genius today.
