A circular route through the baroque episcopal town that ideally combines nature, history, and art.
The path begins at Eichstätt Stadt station and first leads over the Herzogbrücke and along a short stretch of the Altmühl – a gentle start with views of the river valley. A few minutes later, you already immerse yourself in tradition: The St. Walburg Monastery, a Benedictine convent since the 11th century, is not only a spiritual center but also an internationally known pilgrimage site.
Then continue right into the baroque old town. The Residenzplatz forms the splendid center: with the Marian column, the former prince-bishop’s palace, and adjacent the Eichstätt Cathedral St. Willibald, one of the oldest sacred buildings in Bavaria (founded already in the 8th century). Small lanes, townhouses, and squares around tell the story of a city that acquired its baroque face in the 17th and 18th centuries.
On the way back, the Heilig-Geist-Brücke spans a mood-filled arch back to the Altmühl. Next to the statue of the bridge saint John of Nepomuk, you can also find the Prelle, a medieval pillory where public sentences were once executed.
From the bridge, it is only a short walk back to the station.
Author’s recommendation
You should definitely visit the cathedral – and afterwards you can enjoy a coffee right next to it.
