A walk through Augsburg is like a little journey through time – from Roman roots to medieval splendor to baroque magnificent buildings and modern lifestyle.
The city, one of the oldest in Germany, was founded by the Romans as early as 15 BC and has since written an impressive history reflected in numerous sights.
Those who stroll through the old town inevitably encounter the formative legacy of the Fugger – the merchant family who economically shaped not only Augsburg but all of Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. A special highlight is the Fuggerei, the oldest still existing social housing complex in the world, which still fulfills its original purpose: providing affordable housing for needy citizens.
Not far from there rises the imposing town hall, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. The Golden Hall inside, with its magnificent coffered ceiling and gilded ornaments, is one of the most beautiful historic interiors in Germany. Opposite watches the Perlach Tower over the city – those who climb the 261 steps are rewarded with a magnificent view over the rooftops of Augsburg.
Another landmark is the Augsburg Cathedral, whose history dates back to the 8th century. Its Romanesque towers and Gothic windows – including some of the oldest figurative stained-glass windows in Europe – tell of the city's spiritual depth and artistic significance.
But Augsburg is not only about the past: In the canals of the historic water management system, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, sustainable resource management is also reflected. They run like a network through the city and give it a unique character – almost Venetian, only Bavarian.
Author’s recommendation
Be sure to stop by the Augsburg Puppet Theatre! Even if you don't attend a performance, the puppet theatre museum "die Kiste" is worth a visit – not just for children!
