The Fugger family has shaped Augsburg like no other. In just three generations, the family business has risen to become one of Europe's leading trading houses. Jakob Fugger founded the Fuggerei to offer pious but low-income citizens a dignified home. The first houses were built from 1516.
Today around 150 needy citizens of Augsburg live in the Fuggerei. The annual rent is 88 cents and three prayers a day. Only citizens of the Catholic faith are admitted. The museum, the church and the show apartment of the Fuggerei can be visited for an entrance fee.
