9 Kluckbach - Red-backed shrike and checkered skipper
Biologische Station StädteRegion Aachen e.V.
On this route, you can see checkered skipper butterflies and red-backed shrikes with some luck. You pass through areas where conversion measures from spruce forest to deciduous forest have been carried out.
The route runs through forest and past meadows. There are partly longer ascents. You pass areas where spruce trees have been felled and deciduous trees planted to initiate the transition to species-rich mixed deciduous forest. At gorge forest sites, typical plants such as the persistent silverleaf and the almond-leaved spurge can be found. At the northern point of the hiking route, you pass an extensively managed meadow where, among others, dark mullein and round-leaved bellflower grow. Here you can see many butterflies in spring and summer, including checkered skipper, large wall brown, and chimney sweep.

From the parking lot, we walk towards the church and turn right behind the church towards the sawmill (Borngasse). We follow the Borngasse to Leykaulstraße, from which a farm track branches off to the right after about 25 m. We follow this down into the valley.
The path makes a sharp curve around a pond, then leads through spruce forest for a while until it turns left into the Kluckbach valley. At this curve, a narrow path branches off to the right at a bench into the forest, which we follow downhill.
Behind a footbridge over the Velingensief, we turn left onto a wider path to the Kluckbach (hiking trail 57). Immediately after crossing the stream, we turn left again onto an inconspicuous path that leads steeply up the slope through the forest.
We reach a farm track, which we follow to the right until after about 500 m we meet an asphalt path. Here we go right to the next intersection and then straight into the forest.
We follow the forest path straight ahead until it bends to the right. However, we continue straight onto a path, which we follow downhill to the end. We come to a path and turn right.
After 550 m, we reach the next intersection at the sawmill. We follow the forest path diagonally left uphill, keep left at the next fork towards Rohren, and finally reach Borngasse and the starting point of the hike again.
