7 Rur - mountain hay meadow and gorge forests
Biologische Station StädteRegion Aachen e.V.
On this circular route, you walk through ancient gorge forests that still display the typical vegetation. You pass areas where measures have been carried out to convert the spruce forest into mixed deciduous forest.
The route leads through gorge forests and along meadows. Large populations of the persistent silverleaf, a typical species for gorge forest sites, grow at the edge of the path. The way goes downhill through spruce forest to the Rur, then uphill again and then runs along meadows. In spring, you can hear the song of the tree pipit here. You pass forest areas where the conversion from spruce to mixed deciduous forest is taking place. In the southern part of the hiking route, you pass extensively managed mountain hay meadows, where wild daffodils bloom in spring, followed later by bear's garlic, devil's claw, woundwort, and black knapweed. Here you can see many butterflies, and with some luck also the blue shimmer fire butterfly on a meadow fallow.

The hiking trail begins on the opposite side of the parking bay and initially descends slightly downhill. We follow the path through the forest until we reach a T-junction. There we turn left and walk down the hill to the Rur.
We continue on this path and hike straight uphill through the spruce forest and then along grassland. At the end of the meadow, the path turns into a narrow trail leading uphill into the forest.
After a short ascent, the path broadens again. We follow this until we turn right at the T-junction.
At the next crossroads, we take the path to the right and follow it for about 1 km (trail 35). After a sharp right turn, we turn left onto the path leading back to the parking lot.
