The approximately eight-kilometer circular hiking trail to the Dieterode Cliffs offers one of the most beautiful views in the nature park – and is varied enough to appeal even to demanding hikers.
Your hike begins either in the idyllic village of Dieterode, at the visitor and information center of the nature park administration in Fürstenhagen, or directly at the hiking parking lot at the Dieteröder Cliffs.
On the 7.5 km circular hiking trail, you will quickly get to know important habitats in the nature park. Along the old railway embankment of the former Heiligenstadt-Schwebda railway line, hedgerows with an exceptionally rich animal and plant life have developed. At the Dieteröder Höhe, a "primeval forest" is developing, where humans consciously do not intervene. Here, trees grow and die as nature dictates. Enjoy, from the Dieteröder Cliffs, one of the most beautiful views over the nature park.
The protected silver thistle blooms sporadically as a characteristic species on the nutrient-poor grassland of the cliffs. With a bit of luck, the fringed gentian can also be found in an abandoned quarry.
Those who want to shorten the circular route have the option of descending via the designated path over a staircase from the "primeval forest" area to Dieterode.
Author’s recommendation
- The old railway embankment: In 1914, the Heiligenstadt-Schwebda railway line was opened to traffic. The railway had to overcome significant gradients and reached its highest point (492m) near Fürstenhagen.
-
Pirschpfad Dieterode: In Dieterode, the approximately 1.5 km circular route begins, where you can discover 17 life-sized animal silhouettes. An interactive flyer is available on site, and at the end, there is a certificate that can be printed out.
- Nature Park Exhibition "Make it sustainable!" in the former water tower in Fürstenhagen: On four floors, you will find an exhibition about the nature park and its partners, as well as the topic of sustainability. From the attic, there is also a great panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

Safety information
A section of the path leads over a staircase. A detour is possible but not separately signposted.
Due to the dryness of recent years, many trees are damaged and at risk of breaking. Therefore, be cautious when staying in the forest, especially in stronger winds. Do not stay under dead tree crowns. Particularly, beech trees tend to suffer spontaneous branch breakage. Entering the forest is always at your own risk.

Roadbook
The path is signposted on both sides – so you can choose the direction yourself.
If you do not start in Dieterode, the detour into the village can also be skipped to shorten the route. However, a visit is worthwhile!
There is also a marked shortcut from Dieterode up to the cliffs. The staircase, however, requires a bit of fitness.
