Tokaj-Hegyalja nem is olyan régen még a magyarországi haszidizmus központja volt – a Lengyelországból érkező zsidó közösségek nemcsak Olaszliszkán, hanem az összes környékbeli településen megtelepedtek. 1944-es deportálásuk szomorú, mégis felemelő mementója az olaszliszkai zsinagóga helyén kialakított emlékhely.

Az eredetileg Lengyelországban élő zsidók első bevándorlási hulláma a 18. század elejére tehető, amikor is a törökök kiűzése és a Rákóczi-szabadságharc után a környék munkaerőhiányban szenvedett – a paraszti munkaerő mellett pedig hiány volt iparosokból és kereskedőkből is. Márpedig a kereskedelmi kapcsolatok a tokaji bor révén adottak voltak, Hegyalja kóser borait előszeretettel fogyasztotta Krakkó, Lvov, Varsó, Lublin népes zsidó közössége. Lengyelország felosztását követően a 18. század végén még egyszerűbbé vált a migráció azzal, hogy Galícia a Habsburg-birodalom része lett. Az egyre népesebb zsidó közösség különlegességét az adta, hogy a többség a mélyen vallásos, ortodox haszid irányzatot követte.

A haszid közösségekben a rabbit cádiknak vagy rebbének hívták, és sokukat vallásos tisztelet övezett, már-már szentként tisztelték őket életükben. A kiemelkedően bölcsnek (esetleg csodatevőnek, látnoknak, gyógyítónak) tartott rebbékhez akár messze földről érkeztek hívek – és sokszor keresztények is megfordultak náluk. Állítólag a sátoraljaújhelyi Teitelbaum Mózes még az ifjú Kossuth Lajost is meggyógyította. A virágzó zsidó közösségeknek azonban ma már csak a nyomait láthatjuk az izraelita temetők, a más funkciót kapott (vagy éppen romos) zsinagógák, és az emlékhelyek formájában.

Az olaszliszkai zsinagóga Friedmann Cvi Herschele, korának legismertebb csodarabbija idején épült az 1870-es évek közepén, fénykorában 500 hívő befogadására volt alkalmas. Helyén ma két emlékfal áll, szomorú mementóként. A Bodrog mentén élő zsidó közösségek tagjait 1944 tavaszán deportálták, a legtöbben közülük soha többé nem tértek vissza. Olaszliszkán is gazdátlanul maradt a zsinagóga, amely a múló évtizedek alatt lassan az enyészeté lett, egyedül keleti fala maradt meg, melyben ma is felismerhető a tóratartó szekrény helye.

Az épület maradványaiból 2016-ban lett Holokauszt-emlékhely, Szécsi Zsolt és M. Juhász Ágnes építészek tervei alapján. Az egykori zsinagóga méreteit a nyugati homlokzathoz nagyon hasonló fal felépítésével érzékelteti az emlékmű, amelynek utcafrontján egy csillagképre emlékeztető településhálót láthatunk, belső oldalán pedig az itt élt családok neveivel perforált 63 mécsestartót. Az emlékezést igazán meghitté teszi, amikor este a kaputól az épületig vezető járdában, illetve az egykori padlón felgyúlnak a fények, amelyek az 1944. április 13-i csillagállást idézik – ekkor deportálták az olaszliszkai zsidókat. Aki teheti, egy kővel, kaviccsal a zsebében érkezzen az emlékműhöz, amely a zsidó hagyomány szerint a lélek halhatatlanságát jelképezi.
