Bodrogolaszi római katolikus temploma bizonyíthatóan állt már a 12. század legvégén, ugyanis Imre király egy 1201-ben keltezett oklevele említést tesz róla. A legkorábbi ma ismert magyarországi hospes-kiváltságlevelet ugyanis az uralkodó éppen „a Szent Miklós egyháznál lakozó pataki vendégtelepesek” számára állította ki, akik nem mások voltak, mint a falut alapító olasz vagy vallon jövevények. (Utóbbi tűnik valószínűbbnek a falu neve ellenére is, ugyanis akkortájt minden neolatin népességre az „olasz” gyűjtőnevet használták).
Az itt megtelepedő hospesek (idegen, jövevény, vendég) vagy a maguk erejéből vagy kegyuruknak, a királynak köszönhetően csinos, kőfallal körített templomot emeltek a Bodrog partján az 1100-as évek végén. A román kori falusi templomok formanyelve köszön vissza első ránézésre is az arányos épületről: a félkör alakú szentélyhez egy valamivel szélesebb és magasabb, téglalap alaprajzú templomhajó kapcsolódik, amelynek tömegéből kiemelkedik a nyugati falnál álló torony. Ez utóbbi egyáltalán nem volt megszokott abban az időben, viszont kifejezetten éke az épületnek, amely így talán leginkább a nagybörzsönyi Szent István-templomhoz hasonlít.
A torony legdíszesebb része az épületnek: az első emeleti lőrésablakok felett pompás egyoszlopos román kori ikerablakok nyílnak. A kapun belépve egyszerű, fehérre meszelt templombelsőbe jutunk, a falakat két oldalon a keresztutat ábrázoló festmények díszítik. A 18-19. században számos átépítés során veszítette el eredeti, Árpád-kori jellegét a templom, amit végül az 1978-79-es helyreállítás során állítottak vissza.
