From Log pod Mangartom, follow the path through the steep gorge of Predilca. The path mostly runs through the forest below the village of Strmec and underneath the main road, which you can sense above you at times. Just a few steps off the path, you can visit two waterfalls, the romantic Zaročenca (the Betrothed) immediately above the confluence of Predilca and Mangartski potok, and the Predilca waterfalls, almost under the saddle, where you also have a view of the Predel fortress. You reach the main road just before the former border crossing at the saddle, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of Mangart, Jalovec, and Loške stene. You descend to the lake, which invites a romantic walk all year round and a refreshing swim in summer, and then continue to Cave del Predil. In Cave del Predil, lead and zinc mining operated until 1991. The mine is now closed, and remnants of that time are the remains of the works, large heaps of waste rock, and a pleasant museum where the miners from Log pod Mangartom are the heroes. Most of the miners moved away after the closure, and the place is only slowly coming back to life.

    Author’s recommendation

The section of the stage from Log pod Mangartom to Predel is very steep, and parts of the path are secured. Be careful.

We suggest hiking only the first part of this stage (7 km) as the stage leads on the main road from Lago del Predil all the way to Tarvisio. You can take a bus from Cave del Predil (8,5 km of the stage) to Tarvisio: bus timetable

    Safety information

The ascent over the Predel saddle is, among the three stages on the route where the elevation exceeds 1,000 meters, the most demanding along with the crossing over the Vrh Bače saddle (Stage 8). In winter or when there is snow – usually from December to April – the described path is avalanche-prone and impassable.

Because the wild stream Mangartski potok crosses the path, it is also impassable in heavy rain. In such conditions, the only sensible alternative is the regional road, which runs more or less parallel to the path.

    WARNING:

Part of the route (on the way to Tarvisio/Trbiž) runs along a regional road, extra caution is required!

    Roadbook

From Log you ascend to Predel on the established shepherd paths, from Predel to Cave del Predel you follow an old soldiers' path and then continue to Tarvisio on the main road in the valley.

Immediately behind the bridge over Predilca you will find a high path that leads you uphill along the gorge. Below the village of Strmec, you continue almost to the regional road, then descend again into the gorge to the confluence of Predilca and Mangartski potok. You visit the Zaročenca waterfall and continue over the steep slope to the fault line and then back into the gorge to the waterfalls of Predilca. The last ascent takes you back to the road and up to the saddle. On the Italian side you will find a path at the second curve that leads you to the lake. On the road, you continue for a few more minutes to Cave del Predil and further to Tarvisio.

Lep pozdrav!

There's a public bus from Lago Predil to Tarvisio. I don't know how to get from Bovec to Lago Predil

Only in July and august there was a bus at 9.30 and 15.30 from Bovec to Tarvisio town (57') and Tarvisio station (63') It stops also at Passo del Predil slovenian border at 10.04 and 16.04. Ask nomago.si There is also a bus from Lago del Predil (Lake) to Tarvisio town at 8.23, 12.43 and 18.28 from mid-June to mid-September, but not on Sundays and August 15th. Moreover, there is a bus at 10.40 which runs in summer only on tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays, but not on August 15th. Ask tpl.fvg.it Until mid-June and from mid-September the bus to Tarvisio starts from Cave del Predil a couple of minutes later, as well as at 13.46, but never on Sundays and italian public holidays.

hi Mirjam, a bit late, but actual reaction, just because others will have the same question. The answer is a clear YES. The Slovenian buscompany Nomago carries out a regular bus service between Bovec and Tarvisio, with a stop in Log Pod Mangartom). Today (Saturday 16 May 2026) I got this bus at 15.45 in Log Pod Mangartom. check the website of Nomago for their timetable. Best regards, A de Buck

If you are not Slovenian or Italian citizen, then you can only cross border on the checking point in Vrtojba or Fernetiči (which are far from the Juliana Trail). In this case, we recommend to take the Alpe-Adria-Trail from Bovec to Trenta and then to Kranjska Gora. Stages 23 and 24. You can check description of stages on this link: https://alpe-adria-trail.com/en/etappen/

Are there currently problems with stage 15? (Borders to Italy are closed) Are there any alternatives?
Hvala!
