Palatinate Hut Route - Short southern route with 3 huts
A short version of the well-known premium route with refreshment stops at three of the Palatinate Forest huts, which are usually open on weekends, and great viewpoints.
This short version of the Palatinate Hut Route starts at the hiking car park in Albersweiler-St. Johann. We hike via Schlossstraße into the vineyards towards Frankweiler and follow the yellow hut marker to the Ringelsberghütte. From the terrace, we have a great view over the Southern Wine Route.
From there, we pass the Eichberg towards the Landauer Hütte at Zimmerbrunnen. Those who wish can take a small detour to the historic forest shower Gleisweiler. This spa facility built in the mid-19th century is considered the only existing facility of its kind in Germany. From early May to the end of October, visitors can refresh themselves here in water cooled to 8-12 °C.
Arriving at the Landauer Hütte, after a rest, the hike continues with a round of the Orensberg. The Orensfels viewpoint offers a wide-ranging view over the Palatinate Forest. Afterwards, we hike downhill again, passing the Naturfreundehaus Kiesbuckel, back to St. Johann.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature
- Always behave considerately, politely and respectfully towards everyone you meet on the way.
- Take care of nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Remember a rubbish bag for the way and take your trash back home.
- Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- Observe all path closures for your own safety.
- Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for rescue vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.
We, your fellow humans and nature, thank you!

Safety information
Especially in autumn, pay attention that leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes on the path. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. Especially in adverse weather conditions, nature trails can have muddy and slippery sections.

Roadbook
The hike starts at the Albersweiler-St. Johann hiking car park and first leads us along the edge of the district to the left through Schlossstraße. We follow the brown hut symbol on a yellow background and walk past the Hotel Berghof between forest and vineyards to Frankweiler. At the entrance to Frankweiler, we turn left into the forest. From here, it goes uphill to the Ringelsberghütte, the first place to stop for refreshments.
Instead of following the long hut route down into the Hainbachtal and to Gleisweiler, we now hike along the east side of the Eichberg to the Landauer Hütte. From here, a detour to the Neuscharfeneck castle ruins is recommended, which is only 700 m from the hut and offers a great view over the Palatinate Forest, the Dernbach valley, the Rhine plain, and other castles and ruins.
Counterclockwise, from the Landauer Hütte, we go around the Orensberg. We pass the viewpoint on the Orensfelsen and then follow the well-known marking downhill towards the Naturfreundehaus Kiesbuckel and Albersweiler-St. Johann, our starting point of the hike.
