A Bene-patak és a Csatorna-patak között magasodó bérc déli részén találjuk a sok gazdát, harcot, ármányt megélt egykori Benevár romjait.

A Mátrafüredet Kékestetővel összekötő, szüntelenül emelkedő K+ jelzésen sétálva pillanthatjuk meg a hegygerincen álló Benevár romjait.

Kilátás nincs róla, de az alacsony, masszív falmaradványok nagy területen szétterülnek.

Történet

Ahhoz, hogy történetét megismerjük, egészen a honfoglalásig kell visszautaznunk az időben, amikor feltehetőleg Árpád egyik vezére kapta ajándékba birtokként a területet. Az ő unokája lehetett a névadó, akit az első vártulajdonosként tartanak számon. Egy virágzó korszakot követően 1241-42-ben Magyarországon végigsöpört a tatárjárás, melynek ez az erődítmény is martalékául esett. 1250-re sikerült újjáépítenie a Csobánka családnak. 

Az első hivatalos írás, amely erről az erősségről szól, ötszögletű épületként mutatja be a várat a körülötte húzódó várárokkal, egy vaskos toronnyal és palotával. A tulajdonosok azonban nem sokáig élvezhették a megújított falak közötti úri életet, mert összetűzésbe kerültek az 14. század első felében uralkodó Károly Róberttel, aki elkobozta, és egy pártolójának adományozta a vagyonukat. Szécsényi Tamás gazdag birtokának részeként a vár megújult, megszépült.

A gazdag nemesember dédunokája, Szécsényi Miklós báró nem volt érdemes a rangjára. Csapodár életet élt, és a pénzhamisításban is jeleskedett, ezért az uralkodó minden vagyonától megfosztotta, majd kiűzte Magyarországról. A király a megszerzett várat a királynénak adományozta, az utána következő tulajdonos pedig a Rozgonyiakra ruházta át a birtokjogot.

Rombolás és rekonstrukció

Végső pusztulásának kezdő lépését valószínűleg a szomszédos várban tanyázó husziták tették meg - de annyi bizonyos, hogy 1497-ben már romként számolnak be a róla szóló dokumentumok. Sokáig állt gazdátlanul és elhagyatva; végül az 1980-as években régészek feltárták a maradványokat, megerősítették a falakat, és a hajdani várkút helyén egy kútházat ácsoltak fából. Jelenleg ezeket figyelhetjük meg a romokat körbevevő várárokkal együtt a területen.

  • Mátrafüredről északkeleti irányban kövessük  a K+ jelzést (1,1 km, 107 m szintemelkedés)
  • Sástón a buszmegállótól az út mentén induljunk délkelet felé! 100 méteren belül  már látjuk a S+ jelzést, amely az erdőbe tér. 1,1 km után a Máriácska-elágazásnál 80 méter erejéig kövessük balra kanyarodva, északi irányba a P és ᵯ jelzéseket, majd a patakon átkelve a K◼ jelzéseken sétáljunk el a kereszteződésig, ahol balra, a K+ jelzéseken jutunk a Benevár romjaihoz (2,1 km, 61 m szintemelkedés).

Parking

  • Mátrafüreden a központban találunk parkolóhelyeket.
  • Sástón 400 Ft-ért kiépített parkolóban hagyhatjuk az autót egész napra.
