Welcome to the Interregio Hiking Trail! Together, we explore the tri-border area between Switzerland, France, and Germany and discover a fascinating and varied piece of Europe! The three major hiking clubs of the region, the hiking trails of both Basels, the Vosges club, and the Black Forest Association have jointly maintained this cross-border trail since the 1980s, which has now been revised and newly marked to invite you to discover the tri-border region!

The fourth stage starts in the Vorderes Wiesental in the municipality of Steinen, one of five gateways to the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. Sandstone quarries in the Buntsandstein were the origin of the village's name. The Buntsandstein extracted here was used, among other things, for the construction of Basel Cathedral. The geologically significant Dinkelberg is also notable. On its highest point stands the lookout tower „Hohe Flum“. It offers magnificent views over the Southern Black Forest, Vosges, Jura, and Alps. The geological features of the Dinkelberg are showcased in the Geo-Museum Dinkelberg, located directly on the Hochrhein. It is best combined with a visit to the Tschamber Cave, an active stream cave. The show cave in the karstified shell limestone of the Dinkelberg is traversed by a Rhine tributary.

Beuggen Castle on the Hochrhein was built in 1246 as a castle of the Teutonic Order. Around 1815, Kaspar Hauser is said to have lived in the castle. Until 2016, it was a conference and meeting place for the Evangelical Church in Baden. It is now used as a hotel and, with its park, is no longer accessible to the public.

    Author’s recommendation

The 1550-meter-long Tschamber Cave on the Hochrhein is one of only three show caves running through shell limestone in all of Germany.

    Safety information

The route runs on safe paths. However, caution is advised at the Teufelsloch sinkhole, even though it is secured with a railing. A fall into the 40-meter-deep hole is life-threatening!

    Roadbook

From the starting point „Steinen Station“ (328 m above sea level), the path is marked with the Interregio hiking trail sign (three black rectangles on a yellow background) and the addition „Interregio Hiking Trail“ on the signposts. Between these, colored diamonds safely guide the hikers along the path.

Initially, the blue diamond leads over the Wiese bridge and under the B317 towards Höllstein. With the yellow diamond, the path ascends to Enzelbuck (467 m). „On the Heath Graves“ we meet the eastern variant of the Westweg (red diamond), which points to the lookout tower "Hohe Flum" (536 m). The 13.5-meter-high tower was built in 1874. 62 steps lead up to the viewing platform. For an intermediate stop, the Hotel Restaurant Hohe Flum, just 80 meters away, invites you in. After 700 meters, at the fork of the Westweg, there is the Altreb rest area with sky loungers in a sunny location.

Following the yellow diamond, we head to the upper village of Nordschwaben (475 m). The Adler guesthouse offers another opportunity to stop with a beer garden. On the way to the community hall, the Interregio route can be extended by a cultural detour via the Nordschwaben sculpture path to the Mauritius Chapel. It was built in the 15th century. In the choir, there are still remnants of wall paintings from that time. At the edge of the Hunzel wetland, the yellow diamond leads through a spruce forest back to the main path at the "hunting lodge".

At the location „Langmatt“, the Hochrhein high trail merges. Its white-blue diamond on a yellow background indicates the further direction. Already after 200 meters, a detour is worthwhile to the large sinkhole Teufelsloch, a roughly 40-meter-deep funnel sinkhole with a continuation of about 100 meters. Along the Hirschbächle, we then proceed to the "beggar's kitchen" in front of Riedmatt. Here are the Storchen restaurant and the Geo-Museum Dinkelberg. Along the Sägebachle, we go under the B34 towards the Hochrhein. In between is the entrance to the Tschamber Cave.

We continue walking directly along the Rhine to Beuggen Castle, but have to make a detour around the beautiful park. The Nature Energy Trail of the Rheinfelden power plant informs about the use of hydropower on the Hochrhein along the way. From the small waterfall at the rapid „Höllhaken“ the path rises to the Old Rhine bridge, which connects the two towns of Rheinfelden. The German and Swiss stations are located at equal distances at the end of this stage.
